Skaneateles run ends in state semis with loss to Batavia (full coverage)

Skaneateles’ perfect season has come to an end, as the Lakers lost 54-49 to Batavia in the Class B state semifinal on Saturday.

“Coach [Briggs], am I good? I’m ready to go inside. I’m ready for bed.” These were the exact words from Batavia senior running back Ray Leach after speaking with media following the game.

Batavia relied heavily on Leach, who rushed for 474 yards on 50 carries and eight touchdowns. This game marks the second week in a row where Leach totaled eight rushing touchdowns. Batavia’s first pass attempt didn’t come until the 6:57 mark in the second quarter.

PREVIEW:

After his team rallied back against powerhouse Chenango Forks last weekend, Skaneateles coach Joe Sindoni’s next test is a Class B state semifinal with No. 2 Batavia and senior running back Ray Leach, who rushed for 417 yards and a state playoff record eight touchdowns last weekend.

No. 2 Batavia (11-0) dismantled Cheektowaga 56-28 in the quarterfinals. Batavia has had limited playoff success in recent years, losing its three previous appearances in the state regionals.

The Lakers (11-0/No. 1 NYSSWA) and the Blue Devils (11-0/No. 2 NYSSWA) will take the field at Union-Endicott High School Saturday afternoon at 3 PM to settle it. The winner will advance to the Class B finals against the winner of the game between Section II’s Glenns Falls (9-2/No. 6 NYSSWA) and Section IX’s Marlboro (10-1/No. 4 NYSSWA). The finals will kick off at noon on Saturday, November 24 at the Carrier Dome.
