W-FL FRIDAY: Justice Smith’s 39 not enough as Northstar tops Lyons; Mattoon’s big night gives Midlakes Lions Club Tourny title

One of the most highly anticipated games in Section V this season was played on Friday night as part of the 2018 Holiday Hoops Classic at Geneva High School. The Lyons Lions looked for revenge for their season ending loss to Northstar Christian in the Section V Class C NYS Qualifier last March. Both teams entered the game undefeated behind their two superstar guards Justice Smith & Miles Brown. Add to that, the fact that Miles Brown was just 64 points shy of the all-time Section V career scoring mark of 2,444. Prior to the tip Geneva’s shiny new gymnasium was filled to capacity, literally, as they turned away late comers at the door.

The game did not disappoint with frenetic, up and down action. The two marquee players mentioned above traded punches with Justice Smith finishing with 39 points and Brown finishing with a game-high 40 points including a pair of free throws to seal the 88-84 Northstar Christian win.

In the second game of the double-header at GHS, it was the host Panthers jumping out to a 31-11 halftime advantage thanks to stifling defense and timely shooting. Christian Tapscott came off the bench to score 9 points in the second quarter to spark Geneva. Tapscott finished with a game-high 13 points, matched by teammates Reid Patchett and Jagger Kerr. Liam Ryan added 7 and Akim Hudson 6 to the balanced attack.

Geneva and Northstar Christian will face off in the tournament final on Saturday night.

Also in Friday night, Midlakes captured the Lions Club Tournament title. The Screaming Eagles trailed tournament host Red Creek 28-12 after the first quarter but Matt Mattoon exploded for a career high 38 points to lead the comeback and a 77-74 win. Mattoon was named tournament MVP and teammate Kyle McCann joined him on the all-tournament team.
