Southern Cayuga valedictorian wins video game scholarship

When most people hear that someone is attending college to learn to make video games, they might think of complex programs, detailed 3D models or powerful computers.

But for Primrose Kirk, the 2018 valedictorian of Southern Cayuga High School, video game school is all about the music.

Kirk, of King Ferry, was one of 35 students awarded a scholarship by the Entertainment Software Association Foundation this year. With the help of the scholarship, which is awarded to help women and minority students make their way into the industry, Kirk will continue her path toward a career composing music for video games, something she’s already been doing for years.

As part of a project in a ninth-grade music theory and composition class, Kirk and her classmates were asked to compose a piece of music to accompany a clip from a video game. Although she’d both been playing games and music for years, it was then that she began to consider composing for games as a career.
