Doubledays’ 9th straight win secures sweep of Williamsport

On the heels of Tim Cate’s second pro start, the Doubledays continue to shake up the New York-Penn League standings.

Auburn completed their third consecutive sweep with a 4-1 win over Williamsport in the hot Pennsylvania air, getting payback for getting swept in mid-June while taking their league-high win streak to nine.

Cate dazzled in his first Doubledays outing on June 28 and tonight was no different. He threw three shutout innings for Auburn while striking out three Crosscutters, all while not allowing a single hit.

Williamsport starter Gustavo Armas, who pitched a seven-inning shutout with seven strikeouts against the Doubledays the last time they faced off, couldn’t funnel that same success against this new-energy lineup. Auburn’s attacked with back-to-back-to-back singles off Armas to start the game, the last of which brought in the first run of the game.

Catcher Israel Pineda build on his 2-for-3 night on Monday with another two hit outing, this time launching a solo bomb in the fourth inning. His second homer of the year, Pineda is quickly showing his maturity both in the batter’s box and behind the plate at only 18 years old.

Williamsport managed to push across a run in the fifth inning, but a two spot for the Doubledays in the seventh inning provided all the insurance Auburn would need to secure the win.

Jose Sanchez, who goes by “The Magician,” pulled two runs out of his fitted cap with a solid single to score two runs. Just a teenager himself at the tender age of 17, he and Pineda are just two of the youngsters in this Doubledays lineup that have stepped up to the plate – both literally and figuratively – to get their team to their ninth straight victory.

The Doubledays will be back in action Wednesday for a Fourth of July matchup against the Spikes at Falcon Park with first pitch at 6:30. You can listen to the game LIVE on FL1 Radio beginning at 6:20. Watch the pregame show at 6 pm here and the post game show here following the game on FL1 Sports.
