The town is celebrating the placement of its downtown on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places.
But the community is doing more than celebrating, said Joan Delaro, it’s looking to see how it can leverage the designation into building improvements and economic development.
“The National Register is a recognized and visible component of land-use, promotes heritage tourism, economic development and the appreciation of historic resources,” said Delaro, who heads the Lyons Main Street program. “The property listing honors the importance it is to the Lyons community. The listing also offers the opportunity to qualify for tax incentives.”
Delaro thinks that Lyons, which was an economic center during the heyday of the Erie Canal, has an opportunity for revival. She said many people are seeking a “more casual and friendly lifestyle” and that Lyons is the kind of place where people can find that vibe.
