Five members of Congress want to fix an error made by a northeastern Medicare contractor that had a significant financial impact on Auburn Community Hospital and 15 other rural hospitals in upstate New York.
U.S. Reps. Chris Collins, John Faso, John Katko, Elise Stefanik and Claudia Tenney have asked House leaders to include language in an upcoming spending bill that would address the error. Congress needs to pass a continuing resolution by the end of this week to avoid a government shutdown.
The problem stems from a calculation of the hospitals’ Volume Decrease Adjustment, a payment formula for hospitals that have a decrease in patient volume over a one-year period.
The goal of the adjustment is to cover some of the hospitals’ costs, such as essential services and staff. The members of Congress noted that the Volume Decrease Adjustment is “critical to ensure continued operations.”
