UPDATE: Penn Yan student threatened to shoot classmate, faces felony charge

Authorities in Penn Yan took a 15-year-old student into custody this morning without incident after he allegedly made a threat that a shooting was going to take place at Penn Yan Academy and Middle School.

The two schools were placed in ‘lockout’, which is an elevated alert status during the early-morning hours after the threat was identified, according to police.

Penn Yan Central School District Superintendent Howard Dennis confirmed that the incident was unfolding during the morning hours on Tuesday, but could not go into detail regarding the incident.

Police said that beyond the accusation that there would be a shooting at the school, the student is accused of threatening to shoot an individual student.

Police say the 15-year-old was taken into custody and charged with making a terroristic threat. The charge is a Class D felony.

Officials noted that it was a ‘lockout’ situation, which is different than a lockdown.
