Immigration activist Cesar Vargas to speak in Lyons

A national advocate for immigration reform who is also the state’s first undocumented attorney will speak in Lyons later this month.

Cesar Vargas will address a forum from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Ohmann Theatre, 65 Williams St.

The program, “Undocumented But With A Voice,” is free, but donations are accepted.

The event is being coordinated by the Citizens’ Response Network of Wayne County — which describes itself as a nonpartisan political action group — and Wayne Action for Racial Equality.

Vargas is one of 800,000 undocumented immigrants that are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which the administration has decided to end. President Donald Trump is encouraging Congress to come up with a legislative solution to allowing those immigrants to remain in the country. The appearance by Vargas was arranged by Dr. John Ghertner, a longtime advocate for immigrants, and in particular those in the agricultural community. He is a member of Wayne County Action for Racial Equality and Citizens’ Response Network.
