Columbia University professor to speak at Wells College

A Columbia University professor will talk about the fight over moral ideas in a free event at Wells College in Aurora, according to a press release.

Dr. Lydia Liu will give a lecture called "Who Owns Great Ideas?" at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Hostetter Lecture Room (209) of Straton Hall. Liu will dive into ideas such as if there are any moral beliefs that are universally held or if cultural relativism — the idea that someone's values and actions need to be considered through that person's culture — can be trusted.

She will shine a light on these issues by looking at United Nations archives on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the years after World War II.

Liu is a bilingual writer in English and Chinese, a comparative literature professor and a media theorist. She is also the Wun Tsun Tam Professor in the Humanities and director of Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia.
