Two casual Finger Lakes restaurants bring the charm: restaurant review

The Finger Lakes culinary scene has its own personality.

Whereas many of Rochester's newer restaurants lean toward urban industrial looks, those in the Finger Lakes often are more warm, artsy and sometimes a little quirky.

Two examples worth visiting: Roots Cafe in Naples and The Elf in the Oak in Burdett. They are about an hour away from each other. Roots Cafe is in Naples, just south of Canandaigua Lake in Ontario County, while The Elf in the Oak lies on the southeast side of Seneca Lake in Schuyler County. But both have casual fare and a laid-back vibe perfectly suited for the area.

From the road, Roots Cafe makes an immediate first impression. The late-1800s two-story house with a cupola on top is painted in vibrant shades of blue and purple. When we arrived, the front porch was full of diners enjoying their meals. Inspire Moore Winery, also painted in vivid colors, is just behind the restaurant.
