Former Genevan in the thick of hurricane relief work

On one hand, Chrystie Payne is thankful her family and friends on St. Thomas are safe after the island took a direct hit from Hurricane Irma earlier this month.

On the other hand, the former Geneva resident can’t say the same for many of the island’s residents and its infrastructure.

“We are so lucky that our houses were saved, but our home — our island — was not spared,” Payne said last week from the New York City area, where she is organizing relief efforts before returning to the U.S. Virgin Islands. “The island is mostly without power. The hospital has sustained significant damage and patients were evacuated. We have emergency medical relief stations set up where doctors on the island are doing the best they can with the supplies they have, but we are quickly running out.”
