Mylisa Larsen’s latest picture book, “If I Were a Kangaroo,” was born from rhyming with her children five years ago in attempts to escape from the quiet mundanity of waiting for the bus.
“You’re waiting for the bus, right? And you have to be out there early enough that you don’t miss it, but that means you’ve got lag time. And it’s boring,” Larsen said.
The Auburn-based author’s solution? A game she called “Rhyme-out,” in which someone would say a word and the other players — her children, Kate and Tim, who were in third and first grade at the time — would take turns rhyming. Whoever couldn’t come up with a corresponding word was out of the game.
