Stephen Aronson was a young attorney in the early 1980s when an opportunity arose to become a Canandaigua City Court judge.
“I was 34 then, but I think I had the right temperament for it,” he said. “That was my first foray into the judicial system.”
Thirty-six years later — and after taking on more responsibilities in the city and Ontario County Court systems that have made him a major player in some innovative court practices — Aronson will retire at the end of the year after reaching the state’s mandatory retirement age of 70 for a municipal judge.
He has enjoyed all of it.
“It’s all about public service. You are helping the public and trying to do what is best for the constituents … and meting out justice in difficult cases,” he said. “It’s challenging but very rewarding. It’s something that kind of suits my personality, so to speak.”
A Seneca Falls native and 1966 graduate of Mynderse Academy, Aronson earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and his law degree from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. He went into law largely because of his older brother, Alan, a longtime attorney who specialized in tax law.
