State Troopers are investigating a fight that turned deadly in Lyons.
It started as a fist fight at an apartment building on Water Street; and ended with a 2×4.
Police say they were called to 43 Water Street in Lyons for an assault in progress.
Witnesses told them that 32-year-old Martin Smallwood, from Lyons struck 42-year-old Camilo Robledo several times with his fist – then began attacking him with a 2×4 wooden board.
Police were able to take Smallwood into custody without incident, but the victim died from injuries sustained in the beating.
The Lyons resident was taken to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and was pronounced dead there. Smallwood has since been charged with first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault.
The investigation remains active, and police say Smallwood was remanded to the Wayne County Jail without bail.
