The Wayne County Office of the Sheriff reported the arrests on Thursday (7/12) at 10 p.m. of a Newark couple following an investigation into a motor vehicle collision on Parker Road in the Town of Arcadia.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Parker Road and Hyman Road where deputies discovered a 2003 Dodge Caravan driven by John R. Malta, age 35 of Tellier Road in Newark, had been northbound on Parker Road and exited the road after failing to negotiate a curve. The vehicle struck a stop sign and continued another 150 feet off the road before coming to rest in the woods.
The investigation revealed that Malta was intoxicated and he was subsequently arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Office for processing.
It was also discovered that there were 2 children in the car under the age of 8, one of which was not restrained in a child safety seat. Both children were seated in the back seat where there was a steel ladder lying over the top of the second and third seat directly above one of the children’s head.
The mother of the children, Shannon M. Trask, age 29, of Ressue Road in Newark, was also a passenger in the car. Trask was also arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s Office for processing.
Malta was charged with Driving While intoxicated, Aggravated Driving while Intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .26%, Driving While Intoxicated With a Child in the Car (Leandra’s Law), Failing to Submit to a Roadside Breath test, two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and numerous other vehicle and traffic charges.
