While it wasn’t a perfect Friday evening matchup against the Spikes, it was more than enough to stop the Doubledays’ short two-game skip. Auburn (12-8) attacked early on, riding the muscle provided by Israel Pineda while battling four errors to get the 4-2 win against the Spikes (8-13).
Auburn doubled it’s scoring from it’s past 18 innings by putting up their two spot early on against Spikes lefty Jake Dahlberg. Telmito Agustin – on a rehab assignment from Potomac – set the table with a leadoff single to start the game. Advancing to third base following a walk to Carson Shaddy and a fielder’s choice, Agustin hustled into home on a Nic Perkins groundout.
The train kept on rolling as Pineda kept his hot July streak alive with a single to left field and advanced to second base on the throw over. Pumbaa entered Friday night’s contest batting .429 in July, further establishing himself as one of the main offense producers on the team despite being one of the youngest at 18-years-old.
His power showcased continued into the sixth inning where Pineda launched a towering solo home run over the center field wall. His dong was the third of the season and put him alongside Jamori Blash for the team lead in RBI with 13.
Nic Perkins tacked on another run for good measure, launching a solo tater of his own in the ninth inning for the Doubledays for his second of the season.
On the mound, Francys Peguero continued his hot streak by only allowing three hits and one earned run over five frames. He collected his second win of the game and exited the game with the same ERA he entered with (1.42).
But while the positives were certainly there for the Doubledays, there were also some definite areas of concern.
Auburn’s four errors wrapped up an overall disappointing series against City College where the Doubledays racked up 10 errors. The team had been defensively sound throughout most of the season and especially during Auburn’s nine-game road trip. But their sloppiness on the field is something that needs to be addressed in their upcoming series against West Virginia.
