Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES students were able to test their mettle in an emergency situation Tuesday — but with pink rabbits instead of humans.
Students took on multiple situations in which they were to operate as if they were actually certified first responders at the Cayuga County Fire Training Tower in Auburn. Auburn Fire Department Lt. Sam Giannettino spoke with students in the New Visions medical professions beforehand. The students were not told what the situations would entail before taking them on. Giannettino, a certified instructor coordinator for Cayuga County Emergency Services, said communication issues among responders in such fast-paced situations can make the difference between life and death for patients.
Before the scenario unfolded, Port Byron student Hannah Martens was chosen as the person to run triage, or the process of working out which patients need which kind of medical care. She was asked to pick another two students to work with her, which she did. Before the event began, Martens stood with her back straight and her arms crossed in her front of her, her equipment in hand.
