Students of Finger Lakes Community College have had their voices heard. The state Education Department has approved a new associate degree in psychology at the college. Students had expressed interest in transferring into four-year psychology programs and beginning in the fall, will have the option of working toward that.
The new program will involve more intense math and science courses that students will be required to perform well in and gives them the opportunity to participate in original research projects within the realm of human psychology. From there, students will be able to move into bachelor’s programs with an eye on getting into fields such as chemical dependency counseling, human services and social work.
Linda Ross, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, is set to become the coordinator for the new program. She highlighted the value the new degree will add to the college in a recent press release.
“Psychology has become a rigorous science,” she said. “We want to make sure our students have a solid background in statistics and research methods when they graduate with an associate degree from FLCC.”
