Geneva takes HOF Classic; Mynderse opens with win over Whitman (W-FL round-up 12/2)

After dropping their opening game to Gananda earlier this week, Brian Miller’s Geneva Panthers bounced back with two straight wins to capture the Waterloo Hall of Fame Classic title this weekend. On Friday night, the Panthers topped Lyons on a late Adrian Porter lay-up and then came back on Saturday night to defeat Weedsport 62-57  in overtime.

Geneva was led by junior center Akim Hudson who had 18 points including a pair of free throws to secure the win late in the overtime period. Reid Patchett scored 16 and Adrian Porter added 12. Weedsport was led by point guard Jake O’Conner with 20 points.



In other action Saturday in Waterloo…

Mynderse Academy opened up their 2017-18 FL East and Section V Class B title defense under first-year head coach Kevin Korzeniewski with a 71-44 win over Marcus Whitman. Mynderse was led by senior power forward Jake Robinson with 14 points. Nine Blue Devils scored in the win.

In the tournament’s consolation game, the Lyons Lions survived a late charge by host Waterloo to win 64-60 behind a tournament high 31 points from junior Justice Smith to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Smith’s younger brother, freshman Justin Smith scored 10 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Derrick Slywka led Waterloo with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Julian Ruiz scored 13 points and JaiQuan Lewis has 8 in the loss.

In the nightcap, the Newark Reds held a 4 points halftime lead over Waterloo alumnus Jeff Ike’s Jamesville-Dewitt Red Rams but couldn’t keep up with J-D in the second half, ultimately falling 60-40. The Reds fall to 0-2 on the young season.

Also on Saturday night…

HAC improved to 4-0 on the year winning for the second consecutive night to capture the Manlius-Pebble Hill Tournament title by defeating Faith Heritage 56-52.

Canandaigua defeated Webster-Schroeder 61-50 to start their season at 2-0.

There was only one Wayne-Finger Lakes girls team in action as Newark took on Plattsburg and came away with a convincing 66-21 win behind 24 points from Tiana Orbaker. Lanasia Dennis added 13 points and 15 rebounds and Ladonia Smith also recorded double-digit rebounds with 10. Caitlin Chopan dished out 6 assists for the Reds in the victory.
