Public housing initiatives in Geneva and Newark could be in jeopardy if a provision in the recently passed House tax reform package makes it to President Trump’s desk.
The Republican bill passed last Thursday in the House eliminates tax-exempt private activity bonds, which are a main financing mechanism for affordable housing projects.
Four upstate Republican members of Congress — including local representatives Tom Reed, John Katko and Chris Collins — voted in favor of the bill.
A group of public housing agencies, including the state Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) and the New York Housing Conference, issued a statement after the bill’s passage Thursday:
