Black Friday.
The words draw mixed reviews. A trend that started during the early-morning hours of the Friday following Thanksgiving — has morphed into a shopping experience that starts late-in-the-day on Thursday.
As brick-and-mortar retailers began competing directly with online retailers for their dollars — ‘opening’ times for ‘Black Friday’ became late-afternoon, and even some early-afternoon openings on Thursday.
The trend has become a bit of a bell curve over the years. While stores and shopping centers have seen more shoppers move away from brick-and-mortar — opting for online options — hours on Thanksgiving and Black Friday have become more complicated.
Waterloo Premium Outlets located in Junius, will do what many other retailers are doing this year. They will open on Thanksgiving for a period of time, close, and then re-open early on Black Friday.
Large chains present a mixed bag of schedules. Some will open early — like Walmart, Target, and others. While some will stay closed entirely until the next day.
“Best Black Friday,” which is viewed as the authority on opening and closing times for major chains and retailers conducted a survey of American, adult shoppers in September. They asked a simple question:
How do you feel about stores being open on Thanksgiving Day?
The results showed that only 5.6 percent of shoppers ‘Strongly Favor’ stores opening on Thanksgiving Day. Only 10.62 percent ‘Favor It’, while another 26.25 percent feel ‘Indifferent’ about it. The survey found that 20.66 percent ‘Dislike It’, and another 36.87 percent ‘Strongly Dislike’ it.
It means 57.53 percent of respondents don’t like the idea of stores opening on Thanksgiving. Compared to the 16.22 percent of respondents who favored it — the stores staying closed on the holiday are earning a little positive press from shoppers.
