Former city of Auburn Superintendent of Public Works Mike O’Neill laughed as he recalled a time when he and former city manager Bruce Clifford, who died Wednesday after a short illness, almost missed their flight home from New York City.
O’Neill said he and Clifford ran up to the airport entrance where there was a row of about 20 glass doors. Most of them were locked, so the two men tried all the doors until Clifford finally opened one of them.
“All of a sudden, Bruce was inside and I was still standing outside. He couldn’t remember which door he opened because they all looked the same,” O’Neill said with a laugh.
The two eventually made it inside and returned to Auburn to continue serving the city.
