Short-line rail company Finger Lakes Railway plans to spend $850,000 to upgrade its weight-carrying capacity in some sections of its network of tracks in Ontario County.
The money also will go toward more routine track maintenance as well.
FL Railway General Manager Joann Armstrong-Bruch said the work includes tie, ballast (stone base) and rail installation on the two lines the company operates in Ontario County.
It’s part of a modernization effort to serve its customers.
“Our goal is to increase the limit from 263,000-pounds per carload to the 286,000-pound design capacity of the newest railroad freight cars,” she said, adding that the 286,000-pound capacity lines are the current industry standard.
“To stay competitive in their respective product markets, our customers need the ability to ship heavier loads for their transportation dollars,” she said.
The 2017 effort includes 32 miles between Geneva and end points of Canandaigua and Victor.
