Herman Avenue Elementary School was abuzz with activity on Saturday morning with hundreds of Cayuga County residents coming together in support of community members living with autism.
The fifth annual Walk for Autism Awareness began in front of the school and proceeded across Genesee Street to the outer loop of Hoopes Park and back to the school. The walk is one of two fundraisers to benefit the E. John Gavras Center.
“The walk is a great way to bring the community together in understanding, inclusion and acceptance of those living with disabilities,” said the center’s communication coordinator, Rebecca Reese. “What these people want more than anything is to just be included in everyday activities. To let others know that they make strides every day in functioning in everyday life. The goal of the walk is most importantly inclusion.”
