A bill that would have allowed those grieving to take more time off to grieve the loss of a loved one has been rejected by New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The legislation would have amended the Paid Family Leave Act to include bereavement.
Cuomo vetoed the bill on Friday.
If it had been approved, workers could have taken off several weeks – a large increase from the typical four-day leave offered by most employers. The amendment would have gone into effect in 2020.
The Paid Family Leave Act went into effect in January and allows paid time off for workers to bond with a new child, care for a family member with a serious ailment, or assist loves ones when a family member is deployed abroad on active military duty.
