Blarney Rock Pub, long-time New York City home for Orange fans, has closed

The Blarney Rock Pub, for decades the home bar for thousands of Syracuse University sports fans in New York City, appears to have closed.

The bar, conveniently located around the corner from Madison Square Garden, seems to have shut down over the weekend, according to several posts on Facebook and other Internet sites. The bar’s web site has been taken down and there was no answer this afternoon at the bar’s phone.

A greeter who answered the phone at the Hooter’s bar next to the Blarney Rock on West 33rd Street today confirmed it was closed. “People have been talking about it all day,” she said.

Steve Bosco, owner of Bosco’s Village Pub in Solvay and a frequent patron of the Blarney Rock, is one of several fans who saw and posted the news on Facebook. He said he’s been trying to reach acquaintences associated with the New York bar since the weekend without luck.

“It really was the New York City home away from home for everybody from Syracuse,” Bosco said. “You didn’t go to a game or tournament without going to the Blarney Rock. They were always welcoming to anyone from Syracuse.”

The biggest Orange moments at the The Blarney Rock may have come during the glory days of the Big East basketball tournament when SU was a member of that conference. That included fan celebrations at the bar following the Orange’s famous 6 overtime victory against UConn in 2009.
