Monroe Community College President Anne Kress portrayed a wide ranging complaint about her administration as a union tactic in an ongoing contract dispute, not a genuine critique of her leadership.
“The way that we resolve a contract is not in the public sphere,” she professed. “It’s not through the media.”
Kress spoke on Tuesday after Monday’s announcement by the MCC Faculty Association saying that 88 percent of the college’s employees, represented by the union and the MCC Faculty Senate, had voted for a resolution of “no-confidence” in Kress.
Kress called the resolution “disappointing” but “not surprising” given MCC’s ongoing stalemate in talks with the union.
The school’s employees had been working without a contract since the last one expired at the end of August.
The resolution, formally drawn up on Nov. 14, spelled out 68 separate complaints about Kress, including accusations of:
• “gross violations” of union contracts
• “intimidation of employees – including women and employees of color”
• “unpredictable, and dangerously capricious employee discipline practices”
• “bloat in management confidential-level positions”
It also brings up the words “contract” or “contractual” 36 times.
