It’s possible we could have a repeat matchup in the race for the 23rd Congressional District seat in 2020.
Less than two weeks removed from the election, Democrat Tracy Mitrano said she will seek the Democratic nomination again in 2020.
“The results of Nov. 6 don’t change the facts,” said Mitrano in a press release. “The people of western New York, the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier deserve affordable healthcare, education that doesn’t come with a lifetime of debt, modern infrastructure, proper conservation of our natural resources and tax policies that serve the working and middle class — not the 1 percent and big corporations. I am committed to working for those causes and these people.”
Meanwhile, the incumbent, Corning Republican Tom Reed, did not definitively say he would be on the ballot in two years, but was clearly leaning in that direction.
“We’re here, we’re going to run through the term,” he said. “We’re not done. The job is not finished.”
Reed seemed to indicate it was a bit early to think about 2020 when he just came off an election that saw him fend off a strong challenge by Mitrano, whom he beat by about 10,000 votes.
Mitrano, like all the other Democrats who sought the nomination during the bruising and costly primary campaign, was a virtual unknown when she started her congressional quest. She admitted she had to work to establish name recognition against an incumbent who was seeking his fifth term.
She thinks the second time could be the charm and points to recent history as an example of what could happen in a district where Republicans have a significant enrollment advantage.
