Agreement between Auburn school district, teachers union finalized

An agreement between the Auburn Enlarged City School District and the teachers union has been approved.

On Tuesday night, the district’s board of education approved the terms of a four-year contract between the district and the Auburn Teachers Association. The agreement covers July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2022, as the last contract expired at the end of the last school year.

Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo said negotiations began at the end of July, and the process came about relatively quickly. He said the teachers union, which has about 370 members, has gone far longer without a contract in the past, but added that is bad for the district and the teachers. Both parties came to the table for these negotiations with “realistic expectations,” Pirozzolo said.

“I believe teachers realize where we are financially, knowing we’re not getting the proper amount of state aid for our school district and us knowing the importance of making our teachers happy,” he said.

The district has argued for years that it has not received the amount of aid from the state it is due, affecting its finances.
