Construction is now complete on a project that will bring people closer to one of downtown Auburn’s more scenic features.
A new boardwalk overlooking the Owasco River, extending from the sidewalk along Loop Road, was finished this month. Measuring 106 feet long by 13 feet wide, the boardwalk includes a poured concrete surface stamped to look like wood grain. Its blue guardrails match others along the river, and the concrete block finish of its foundation blends into stony slopes above the embankment.
The boardwalk is part of the Owasco River Greenway Trail. Bill Lupien, superintendent of the city’s engineering department, said the structure was designed by Clough Harbor Associates, built by Seneca Stone Corp. and inspected by Popli Design Group. Clough Harbor also worked with the city to design the trail, a 12-mile pedestrian and bicycle path that will connect Emerson Park to Wadsworth Park.
The first phase of its construction, spanning Mill Street to State Street, was finished this summer. Work also included paving streets and sidewalks on Canal Street, Lincoln Street, Loop Road, Dill Street and State Street. The sidewalk running along the boardwalk and much of that segment of Loop Road was replaced with brick and relocated closer to the river. Also installed next to the boardwalk was a sign chronicling the history of the area and its roots as Hardenbergh’s Corners, the settlement that would become Auburn.
