Pretrial hearings could be held next month for the stepfather accused of murdering his 3-year-old son in Seneca Falls earlier this year.
Acting Seneca County Judge Jason Cook authorized that step Tuesday when accused killer Donald Bovio appeared in county court. Rome Canzano, the attorney representing Bovio, is seeking to suppress statements Donald Bovio made to police, as well as evidence taken from his home after police obtained search warrants.
Bovio and his wife, Alison, face numerous charges in the May 16 death of Alison Bovio’s son, Panagiotis “Peter” Stephanides-Vacchino. Alison Bovio is being represented by Assistant Public Defender John Nabinger.
Donald Bovio called 911 on the night of May 12 and said the boy fell down some stairs. Peter was taken by a medical helicopter to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where he was placed on life support for several days.
Medical staff told police the injuries were not consistent with a fall, initiating a child abuse investigation that led to the Bovios being charged with assault. District Attorney Barry Porsch presented the case to a grand jury after the boy died, leading to more serious charges.
In addition to murder, the Bovios face charges of manslaughter, assault, reckless assault of a child, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
