If you left your seat at any point during Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Tigers at Falcon Park to grab a hotdog or a pretzel, there’s a good chance you missed at least a few innings.
Both teams came sprinting out of the box – with the game reaching the fifth inning only an hour after the first pitch was thrown at 2:05 PM. Doubledays starter Francys Peguero averaged just 13.6 pitches per inning over his five frames of work, and only required six pitches to get through the fourth. But unfortunately for the Doubledays, the Tigers (20-20) edged out Auburn (21-19) in a 2-0 photo finish race.
El Pegui worked fast and efficiently to start off the game by retiring six straight batters after allowing a leadoff single. The Tigers, however, worked a walk to begin the third inning which eventually came around to score. Peguero kept recorded the next out by getting the batter to pop out to the shortstop, Jose Sanchez, but put one in the wheelhouse of Wenceel Perez. Perez hit a dinger to right center to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead – a lead they would keep for the remainder of the game.
Connecticut starter Jose Vasquez worked just as quickly as Peguero but managed to keep the Doubledays off the board in one additional inning. In his six innings of work, Vasquel allowed just four hits while whiffing five.
The Doubledays’ best chance to score was in the fifth inning when Auburn forced Vasquez to throw 23 pitches – the most he allowed his entire outing. The Doubledays worked the bases loaded after back-to-back singles and a walk from Kyle Marinconz. But with two outs, Cole Daily popped out to the shortstop to end the inning.
