The Skaneateles Central School District's safety committee is eyeing various ways to improve safety for students and staff.
The district created the Safe Schools Community Advisory Committee in April in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida in February and the incident in which the Skaneateles middle and high schools went into "shelter in place," district Superintendent Ken Slentz said. The committee — which includes teachers, parents, district administrators, law enforcement personnel, mental health professionals and board of education members — plans to make recommendations by the end of August and present their suggestions to the board of education.
Slentz said that over the last few months the district learned what it was doing well in terms of safety and what it wasn't doing well. He said that the district had been complacent in its fire drills, but is currently taking a more consistent, layered, methodical approach to safety.
