Gas Free Seneca was formed eight years ago to fight a proposal by a Texas company to store liquid propane and butane in underground, abandoned salt caverns on the southwest side of Seneca Lake in the town of Reading in Schuyler County.
A recent decision by state DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos to deny Crestwood Midstream LLC of Houston, Texas, a permit for the project caused Gas Free to happily declare victory.
That battle won, the group is shifting its focus to stop a proposed incinerator in Romulus between Seneca and Cayuga lakes and seeking more environmental review of the reopening the Greenidge Generating plant in Dresden, Yates County, on the west side of Seneca Lake.
To reflect that new focus, Gas Free officials announced Thursday they have agreed to join Seneca Lake Guardian, an affiliate of the Waterkeeper Alliance.
“We were approached some three years ago by the Waterkeeper Alliance via our website to join that organization as an affiliate,’’ said Joseph Campbell of Hector, president of Gas Free Seneca.
