Police: Auburn man charged with felony for threatening man with hammer

An Auburn man was arrested Sunday evening for threatening another man with a hammer, the Auburn Police Department said.

Auburn Deputy Police Chief Roger Anthony said that at around 6 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the area of 132 Park Place for reports of a fight in the street. Police learned that 27-year-old Ryan Scott Kelsey had threatened a man with a hammer.

Citing the victim’s impact statement, Anthony said a 44-year-old man had observed a fight in progress and tried to break it up. At that point, Kelsey allegedly threatened the man with a hammer.

Kelsey was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony, and second-degree menacing, a class A misdemeanor. Anthony said the weapons charge was upgraded to a felony due to a prior conviction for resisting arrest in February 2016.
