An Auburn man will spend the next four years in prison for assaulting his girlfriend with a box cutter.
In April, John Hook, 58, of 7 Washington St., pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault, a class D felony. At the time, he said he’d been in a domestic dispute with a 46-year-old woman, and he cut the back of her head with a razor knife.
During Hook’s plea, Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said Hook had threatened to kill the woman, who required seven or eight stitches or staples to close the wound. Hook had laughed and claimed he’d been hurt as well, saying he had the scars to prove it.
Following Hook’s arrest April 2, Auburn Deputy Police Chief Roger Anthony said Hook had a lengthy criminal history. The 58-year-old had 58 prior convictions, five of which were felonies related to the sale or possession of a controlled substance. As such, he could have been prosecuted as a predicate felon and faced life in prison.
