The DEC says that 10 gallons of raw sewage per minute have been spilling into the Cayuga-Seneca Canal throughout the day on Thursday.
According to an alert issued by the state, it’s not clear how long the sewage has been leaking into the Cayuga and Seneca Canal, but crews were working Thursday morning to dig up and repair the break.
The Cayuga and Seneca Canal runs between Seneca and Cayuga Lake, and connects to the Erie Canal.
Town officials have no commented on the circumstances that led to the break.
