Costs increasing for two downtown Auburn construction projects

The Auburn City Council will vote Thursday to spend more money on two ongoing projects: the Genesee Street paving project and the Equal Rights Heritage Center construction project.

Because of work beyond the project's original scope, the city will pay the project's construction contractor, F. Rizzo Construction, an additional $474,884.49. In January, the city council awarded Rizzo Construction the construction contract for over $4 million.

The added work includes additional paving, replacing and improving additional sewage, water and drainage structures and extra work on sidewalks. The escalation of petroleum prices also contributed to the project's cost increase.

Paving on Genesee Street will continue Wednesday night and is scheduled to wrap up Friday at 7 a.m. If that work goes as planned, City Clerk Chuck Mason said back-in angle parking will begin on Genesee Street on either June 26 or 27. He said the city will know for certain when the parking change will start at the end of this week.
