If you can’t get to the home, you can go to the state Department of Health website. You also can check the federal Nursing Home Compare site for the reports and a star rating that shows how the home stacks up against its peers. Such accountability has fueled Democrat and Chronicle articles on problems at Rochester-area nursing homes.
But as an exclusive investigation by USA Today and the Boston Globe found out, families of veterans seeking to place their loved one in any of 133 nursing homes operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs wander an information desert.
Veterans, their families, members of Congress and others who could hold the agency accountable have no idea about the ratings, inspections, and quality measures of those facilities because the VA has, up until now, kept them secret.
