Air quality alert issued for Upstate NY for Father’s Day

An air quality alert has been issued for much of Upstate New York for Sunday.

High heat and strong sunlight are expected to boost levels of ozone during the day, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said. The alert is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The state Department of Health encourages people who have respiratory problems, including asthma and heart disease, to limit strenuous activity outdoors during the alert.

The National Weather Service is also likely to issue a heat advisory for Sunday. Temperatures are expected to reach into the high 80s, and dew points could exceed 70 degrees. That combination could be dangerous for people engaged in strenuous activities outdoors.

Monday could be even hotter and muggier, with the heat index approaching 100 degrees.
