The 2018 Laurel House third annual 5K race challenged all involved, as downtown construction forced the adoption of a new route. Weather was ideal, and over 327 were registered to participate in the June 9 event to support to support the Laurel House Comfort Care Home. A score of volunteers arrived at 6:30 a.m. to set up for the morning’s activities.
The Alex Eligh Community Center on East Avenue hosted the run/walk, providing space both inside and outside for race support and was the start and finish location. An added surprise was the sight of a drone that followed the race from several feet in the air. Park Presbyterian Church hosted a chicken barbeque next door, providing a festive atmosphere.
First place finishers were not new to the 5K. Eighteen year old Dillion VanDeMortel earned the male award for the third straight year with a time of 15:58, and fourteen year old Trinity Wells was the female first place finisher for the second straight year with a time of 19:10.
