Comptroller’s office auditing New York school safety plans

State audits have begun on school safety plan implementation.

The office of the New York State Comptroller announced Tuesday it has started audits on the state education department and the New York City Department of Education to ascertain if they are properly ensuring schools have sufficient and up to date safety plans in case of a school shooting or other emergency.

The audits will look into the state Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act, part of which obligates schools to enact plans covering topics such as “safe evacuation, communication in emergencies, emergency responder access to building plans and school violence prevention training,” according to a news release.

The audit will also include how districts executed the act, which was signed into law in 2000. Field work is set to start this month.
