Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says a deputy is recovering after being struck by a drunk driver on Saturday in the Town of Sodus.
The Sheriff’s Office reports that a Sodus driver, identified as Mauricio Mundo, 31, of Sodus was traveling west on State Route 104 when he struck a deputy standing on the side of the road. According to Virts, that deputy was investigating an unrelated vehicle and traffic complaint. At the time, Mundo failed to move over for multiple emergency vehicles with their lights that were on-scene of the original complaint.
He identified the injured deputy as Caitlin Fitzgerald, who was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Virts says Mundo was arrested for third-degree assault, driving while intoxicated, failure to yield for an emergency vehicle, unlicensed operator, operating without insurance, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, unregistered vehicle, and improper and/or switched plates.
Mundo’s blood-alcohol content was determined to be 0.17 percent.
He was arraigned in Sodus Town Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail in lieu of bail.
