There was another long ball hit by Chris Varone at Frontier Field, and this home run helped launch the Victor Blue Devils into the semifinals of the Class AA baseball state tournament.
Varone’s second homer of the postseason at the home of the Rochester Red Wings sent the Blue Devils (19-5) to a 3-1 win over Lancaster (17-2) in a state quarterfinal game Saturday in downtown Rochester.
“We’ve been working so hard for this all year,” Varone said. “To get a chance to play Lancaster was great. A great team, probably the best team we played so far this year, and to beat them to head to the final four is a great feeling.”
