Waterloo Memorial Day parade to honor Sampson Naval Training Station

From 1943-55, a period spanning World War II and the Korean War, roughly 741,000 Navy and Air Force recruits were trained at Sampson Naval Training Station and Sampson Air Force Base.

That area is now home to Sampson State Park and the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

This year’s honor float in the Memorial Day parade at the Birthplace of Memorial Day will pay tribute to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Sampson Naval Training Station.

Celebrate Commemorate parade co-chairwomen Sarah Smolinski and Nicole Hunsberger invite all Navy and Air Force veterans who trained at Sampson to ride on the honor float in this year’s parade. It’s being built by a Girl Scout troop based in Romulus.

An estimated 411,000 Navy recruits were trained at Sampson from 1943-45, while 330,000 Air Force personnel trained from 1950-55.

The Memorial Day parade will line up at 10:30 a.m. May 26 on Clark Street and step off promptly at 11 a.m. for the march down Main Street to LaFayette Park.
