Feher Rubbish is going out of business.
At close of business on Friday the company, which has existed for more than 50 years will be no more. Cicero Town Supervisor Mark Venesky verified that information with ownership.
“We have 10,200 households in the town of Cicero. This is a health crisis because if we don’t pick up garbage we have a real problem,” said Venesky.
The supervisor hopes to confirm a temporary trash removal company by Friday, but no guarantees had been made.
Those in Wayne and Ontario counties were struggling over the last 30 days getting consistent garbage pickup. Some were even struggling to get in contact with the company’s headquarters.
“They tell us we have to put out our garbage on a particular night and then they don’t come for two or three days sometimes,” explained village of Clyde Chief of Police Jeff Shields.
Feher served communities in Western and Central New York. They even serviced parts of the Southern Tier. Specifically, residents in Clyde, Lyons, Geneva, Tyre, and Galen all reported issues with collection.
However, that won’t be the case any longer. Problems began arising earlier this month, as residents in Seneca and Wayne counties said they were not receiving regular pickups of their waste. While staffing issues and maintenance challenges were blamed on social media – the company made no public push to clear up the concerns.
Then, the news came that the business would be ceasing operation on Friday.
The City of Geneva said that while they seek out a new waste removal service, Finger Lakes Disposal will fill the void. Officials said updated information would be placed on the website soon.
Meanwhile, upset residents had more questions than answers on Friday. A Seneca County resident who signed up with Feher recounted her experience over the last 30 days. “On April 23, 2018 I spoke with someone at Feher – they said to send a check for $69.66 for 3 months service in Willard,” Lolly Van Hyning explained. “On April 24th I mailed the check. I called many times as they neither gave me a receptacle nor picked up my trash. I have left messages and called and spoke with someone to return my check.” She says that as of Friday – no one has notified her of any changes to the business, despite the confirmation from local officials that Feher has gone out of business.
