Twenty-four hours after Assemblyman Bob Oaks announced he will not run for re-election this year, he received a call from Lyons Supervisor Brian Manktelow.
Manktelow, who was a state Senate candidate in 2016, wants to succeed Oaks, R-Macedon, in the state Assembly.
In a phone interview Monday, Manktelow confirmed he is running for the Republican nomination in the 130th Assembly District. The district covers all of Wayne County, the northern towns in Cayuga County and three towns in western Oswego County.
Manktelow, 54, is the first Republican to enter the race after Oaks' announcement Friday.
"Bob and I have talked many times over the last few years, especially after the Senate race," Manktelow said. "I was surprised that he decided to retire. He did a good job for us. He's a good man and I want to try and follow his footsteps as best I can."
A farmer and Army veteran, Manktelow was a Lyons town councilor before being elected supervisor. He has served nine years as town supervisor and a member of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors. He is vice chair of the county board and leads the finance committee. That experience, he said, has helped him better understand the impact the state has on local government.
