For some of the runners in Saturday’s Middle Finger 5K along the shore of Seneca Lake, it’s an early-season warmup for more challenging events ahead.
For many of them, though, the run/walk is much more personal.
The Middle Finger 5K raises money for Thrive to Survive, a group providing support to adults living in the region being treated for cancer.
Organizer Jen Harris of Geneva said cancer has touched the lives of many of the runners and walkers taking part in the event, which starts at the crack of dawn, 6 a.m. Some are battling cancer themselves or have friends or relatives with the disease. Some are survivors, while still others are running in memory of loved ones.
Harris, a long-distance runner herself, is no exception.
Her son, Max, is a brain cancer survivor, and her family’s experiences led her to form Thrive to Survive several years ago with several friends.
