Mental health satellite office opens inside Wayne Central High

Last month, students at Wayne Central School District held a walk-in to support the victims of the Florida school shootings. Now, the district is making a big move to help its own, students here who are anxious or depressed.

“This is the right step to take,” said Superintendent Mathis Calvin, III.

The school shootings left such an impression that Wayne Central students, who are hundreds of miles away and share the same mascot Eagles, came together to make a banner of support. Senior Cloie Simpson’s additional project was to talk openly about the health problems students face – the ones that are not handled in the nurse’s office.

“My whole project was about mental health. I think we should be open to talk about it because its not bad, and its something that can be diagnosed,” she said.

Students who are injured or running a temperature won’t think twice about going to the nurse’s office. The district now has an office across the hall for students who need mental health services. “Mental illness today – there’s still a lot of stigma attached to it, even in schools. We’d like to erase that for our students,” said Superintendent Calvin.
