New Yorkers are blaming doctors who over-prescribe opioids as the most responsible contributor for the current opioid crisis, according to a new Siena College poll.
The poll, released on Sunday, found that 80 percent of statewide residents believe that allowing patients too many pain pills, along with pharmaceutical companies promoting legal drugs without fully warning about risks are either "somewhat responsible" or "very responsible" for the epidemic gripping the state.
New Yorkers also said that government entities across the state are not doing as much as they can do address opioid abuse, the poll said.
When asked to divide 100 percent of the money available in New York to address the opioid crisis, the poll found that people would use 25 percent on funding treatment and rehabilitation, 22 percent for addressing the root causes, 19 percent on public education and awareness, 18 percent to address those responsible through litigation and regulation and 16 percent to empower the criminal justice system to address the problem.
